Wednesday, November 5, 2008 A moment in history. And America is cool again. Look at this badass. He's our next President!!!!!!!! Hooray! Rock Obama!
* * * Monday, November 3, 2008 DMF_November:
More pics HERE. * * * Monday, October 27, 2008 So this weekend was a busy one. First, on Friday, I was a beatnik:
It was that weird radio play performance of Green Apple Winter. I was quite nervous, as I wasn't sure what people would make of it--I don't even know what it was we were doing, exactly--but it was awesome! We've never run through more smoothly... save the minor hang-up of Beth smashing a wine glass in her hand and, unbeknownst to me, bleeding profusely throughout the entire show. Her script is covered in blood. We ought to frame it. Anyway, it was cool. I'll have a little video of it at some point, and will be sure to post it on the ever-important mandylevy.com! And then on Saturday night, Toy Band came together for our first show since last November! Luckily, we only play toys, so it didn't take us more than an hour to relearn our songs. It was a Halloween show so we dressed as teal and purple crayons. Pictures soon..... Ok that's it for now! DMF November this Saturday! Bye. * * * Monday, October 20, 2008 Ok, so this Friday I'm going to be performing a live radio play in an old Carnegie auditorium for the opening of a new "Spoken Word" art exhibition. Look at this place!!!!
Ok, ok, that's the building circa 1904 and a lot of it has changed, but it's still a really amazing space. Anyway it's going to be awesome. I've reworked one of my short stories--Green Apple Winter--into a sort of Prairie Home Companion script, and will have four sound effects people on stage with me to make noises as they are deemed necessary. More when the reviews come in... * * * Monday, October 13, 2008 Dance_MF October was awesome.
Video HERE * * * Friday, October 3, 2008 And another month goes by without an update. I apologize, but please understand that I haven't even been able to check Hipster Runoff regularly, let alone maintain mandylevy.com news! Seriously. This sucks. Don't get a job. Stay in school or marry rich or have a kid or something, but don't get a job. In happier news, a big weekend lies ahead! Tomorrow is the Red Bull Soap Box Race in Mt. Adams, and my friends Melinda and Lacey and Erich and Jason Voss are gonna be careening through the gates as Team Bull Fish. It's going to be insane! I'm so excited. I was planning on making a heart-wrenchingly poignant documentary about the adventures of Team Bullfish, but then... psych! I had to stay at the office until 9 at night for a month and a half. Anyway, the race will be fun. Also, tomorrow is the third Dance_MF. Not only will it be awesome as always, but Projector Extraordinaire Mandy Levy got a nice little Q&A write-up in the CityBeat blog, The Morning After. A good plug for PROJECTMILL, Dance_MF, and Cincinnati in general! Thanks to Maija for the awesome opportunity! Ok so am I gonna see all you bitches at the Tavern tomorrow? Over and out. * * * Wednesday, September 10, 2008 And, as promised, Dance_MF September:
Monday, September 8, 2008 Oy vey! It's like I win an Emmy and nothing else matters! Sorry, beloved mandylevy.com fans, I have been absent. (real work sux). I'm back now, if only for a short while, but long enough to fill you in... 1. New issue of Milk Money is out and available on participating hipster newsstands (i.e. Urban Outfitters, Shake-It Records, American Appy, and Ink Tank). It's got my last two Oliver Prose stories. 2. The September edition of Dance_MF happened over the weekend. It was awesome. This month's "theme" was DMF Academy--a "back to school" sorta thing. We rented a mascot and called him the Razzlebear, had a Dance Dean handing out Dance Diplomas, and set up an overhead projector to welcome lewd dry-erase graffiti. Pictures soon!! * * * Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Here's the DePauw article on our win. I love our jackass quotes. * * * Monday, August 11, 2008 I WON AN EMMY!!!!!!!!! I am now legally, officially, for all my days, "Emmy Award-Winning Writer Mandy Levy."
(Yoinked this one from the photog's website; I'll buy it Buster, don't worry.)
It was really cool cuz everyone from the BSPG table won. Holla!! So anyway, that's that. It was incredible. Now I'm going to go drink champagne and eat noodles with hot sauce and parmesan on it. Love, Emmy Award-Winning Personal Website Administrator Mandy Levy * * * Friday, August 8, 2008 * * * Thursday, August 7, 2008 Dance_MF was MF-ing awesome.
Even my chandelier made of beach balls turned out beautifully!
There were probably like 200 people there, looking fabulous and dancing hard through the night. Our video loop was the coolest, the skrim (creating the DJ silhouettes) was INSANE, the music was perfect, people were happy...It was so fun. And save the smoke alarm going off and the fire department showing up but not being able to turn it off for a good hour, I'd say it went off without a hitch! It was awesome. I'm proud of us. More pics on Flickr if you're interested. Next DMF = 9.6.08. Be there or be a complete loser. PS. CityBeat posted this little write-up and photo album today. Thanks Maija!! * * * Friday, August 1, 2008
We'll take it! American Rhapsody won "Best Use of Music" in the Lite Brite Best of the Test. With our luck, John Waters probably presented the award and we weren't there to accept. Ah well, maybe I'll get a call from him some day to play Hatchet Face's lil' sis:
* * * Monday, July 28, 2008 I'll never be "too tired" again. I could kill myself. Honestly. Yesterday, after a long and fabulous day of tubing on the Ohio River, I decided I was "too tired" and it was "too expensive" to go to the final night of Lite Brite Test, where our American Rhapsody was showing. On that final night, we were going to find out whether or not our video made it into the "Best of the Test," and ultimately whether it won any awards. AND John Waters was to present. But because it was $25 and my arms hurt a bit, I said screw it, it's a popularity contest, there's no way we got in. And then OF COURSE, just now, on the dawn of this lovely Monday morning, I come into work to check my email (as I have no internet access at home; another lesson learned the hard way) only to discover that we have indeed been selected for Best of the Test, and because of that, ticket prices are reduced to $15, but even better, if we're receiving an award, it's FREE. More later, if I'm not dead already. * * * Friday, July 25, 2008 That means you. Ok so I guess now's as good a time as any to unveil PROJECTMILL's latest venture, Dance_MF (or, for the unedited version, see above).
The first Saturday of every month, we're going to be taking over the giant back room at Northside Tavern for a dance night/art extravaganza. The first one is next Saturday, Aug. 2. It's going to be really awesome, complete with sweet sweet music, video productsion, art decor, and the most tragically hip scenesters in Cincinnati. So put on them dancing shoes, motherfucker! Time to cut a rug! * * * Tuesday, July 22, 2008 Still no news on the alleged msnbc plug. The numbers still rise on our AmRhap view count, but the only new testament I've found is this random blogpost. Which was nice. But I've gotten no further than that in my investigation. Anyway. I recorded some saxophone with Ben of Bad Veins yesterday. I was pretty crappy; I used to be awesome. How is it that when we're kids we're phenoms with musical instruments and foreign languages, and within ten years it's like that part of your life never happened? I used to wail Lisa-Simpson style on my sax in junior high. First seat in jazz band, bitches! But now, I can barely squeak up a C-major scale. And hell if I can read music. But I digress. We had fun and got some possibly usable stuff down. (Though drummer Sebastien will likely veto the whole thing; he hates horns.) The best part is that Ben might be game to be my M. Ward and transform me into the throwback songstress I always wanted to be! When he's done with his Bad Veins record, I'm to present demos of my 12 best songs and then we'll work together to make them fabulous. Zooey and Jenny, look out! And oh yeah. TRACER posted my review of Oneida. I enjoyed this project. * * * Tuesday, July 15, 2008 Two bits of news. One: Two: * * * Monday, July 14, 2008 TRACER posted my review of Facts About Funerals. I didn't really care for them.
* * * Friday, July 11, 2008 Good news! Just found out that Lite Brite Test, a really cool Cincinnati film festival, will be showcasing American Rhapsody, our Emmy-nominated Obama-endorsing YouTube video! And possibly even cooler (no, definitely even cooler) is the news that John Waters has just been announced as the special guest!! Should be fabulous!!
* * * Monday, July 7, 2008 My hometown newspaper, The Doings, posted this little article about my Emmy nod. I'm happy with it! Which is good because I'm usually really nit-picky about journalistic liberties; without a PR rep, those news reporters can make you look like a real idiot if they want to! But this one, luckily, was not so. I only wish she had included the tidbit from our interview when she asked me, "What has kept you going?" and I responded, without hesitation, "Vanity." * * * Monday, June 30, 2008 THIS is exciting news! The American Screenwriter's Association is moving to Cincinnati! Who'da thunk? * * * Wednesday, June 25, 2008 I wrote a review for TRACER. It's on Foals. They suck. Enjoy!
* * * Wednesday, June 4, 2008 Ol' DPU is proud of its grads! Ch-ch-ch-check it out! * * * Monday, June 2, 2008 I'm sweating, shaking, and I feel like I'm about to vomit. But only sublime happiness shall spew from this joyful geyser, for I've just discovered that I have been nominated for an Emmy!!!!!
Pete and I both have our names on the nod for American Rhapsody, the political parody sing-along we made last summer in the heat of our apathy-turned-passion for Decision 2008. It all started when Pete substituted "Obama" for "Mama" while singing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" in the shower... Then I penned an entire parody, we recorded it professionally, shot it in DC, and put it up on YouTube in the hopes of becoming the Next Big Thing... And now all I have to say is, ObamaGirl, you can suck it. Emmy Award-winning writer Mandy Levy. It's got a ring! * * * Thursday, May 22, 2008
New Project Alert! TRACER Magazine is a new indie music mag and website based out of Cincinnati, and it looks like PROJECTMILL is going to be teaming up with them to ensure its awesomeness! We had a brainstorm dinner last night, and we've got tons of great ideas to launch this baby proper! AND I'm going to join the staff as a contributing writer, doing reviews/interviews/etc. But I also have an awesome specialty column I'm preparing to pitch to them. But I'm not posting it here till I get the greenlight... More to come! * * * Thursday, May 15, 2008 How does it work with ghostwriting? Am I allowed to talk about it? Probably not. That's kind of the only rule, right? No talk, just write. That has to be a contstant struggle for a full-time ghostwriter. I bet they have more issues than anyone; more issues than a dentist. (Everyone knows dentists have the highest suicide rating of any profession. Did YOU know that?) But really. Ghostwriting is the pits! No credit where credit is due! Not ever! I'd kill myself. I'm doing it now. Not killing myself. Ghostwriting. But I'm not allowed to say. But I will, because it doesn't matter, because it won't go anywhere. It won't be chosen. I'm ghostwriting a Hollywood pitch for a book deal for a high-profile call girl. One that ran with the same crowds as Eliot Spitzer's bitch. That's all I can say. My friend asked me to help and I'm probably doing it all wrong but it's fun and it's news so I'm mentioning it. The end. * * * Tuesday, May 13, 2008 Read Milk Money Volume Two: Percent online!!!! * * * Friday, May 9, 2008 Milk Money release party was a huge awesome success. Here's a picture of me reading. I'm an ant.
And here's me with Maija and Ian, who are the awesome co-founders and co-editors of the magazine, and also Caleb Mathern (contributing author) and then another reader/writer who I don't know.
Anyway though lots of people came out and lots of people read and lots of people had a really nice time. There was even a guy I met named Jeff who might be interested in some of my fiction for a magazine he edits, called Evil Dog. Apparently they've been defunct for a while but they're coming back! Looks like some pretty cool stuff. I'm excited to send something his way. So thanks again to Feralmade and Milk Money. Hope we all do it again sometime soon!! * * * Monday, April 28, 2008 The Milk Money release party will in fact be at Feralmade gallery this Friday, May 2, from 7 till 12. They're asking a 2-dollar donation at the door but that gets you a cup for free beer and wine. I'm reading an excpert from "Oliver Prose and his Giant Head" at around 7:30. And from the looks of the line-up so far, I'm proud to say that I'm the only female author reading her work! Girl power! Anyway, be there or be square! * * * Saturday, April 19, 2008 Go pick up your copy of Milk Money Volume Two: Percent!! It's at Urban Outfitters in Clifton, Shake-It in Northside, and InkTank in Over the Rhine. Looks really good!! And damn, who wrote that Oliver Prose story?? That is some good stuff!! * * * Friday, April 18, 2008 So. Pete and I just signed the lease on what will soon be THE new hotspot for creatives in Over the Rhine. We're planning on hosting art openings, live bands, karaoke nights, and checker tournaments (see pics below and you'll understand why this is imperative). And did I mention the kitchen floor lights up like a 1970s discotheque? No? Well, the kitchen floor lights up like a 1970s discotheque. Now this is what I call home, sweet home. * * * Saturday, April 12, 2008 Holla! I just got official word that my Oliver Prose short fiction trilogy is getting published in Milk Money, a really awesome local Cincinnati lit mag. Part One, "Oliver Prose and his Giant Head," will be featured in this newest issue, Volume Two: Percent, due out some time next week. And my three parts are being serialized, so the next two will be saved for the third and fourth Milk Money issues. Aaaand, there's gonna be a release party (probably at Feralmade; details coming soon), and I'm gonna read at it! Holla back!
* * * Thursday, April 10, 2008 WOXY videos are pretty much all done and up on Vimeo. Ugh. It's been taking forever, but at least now we've got a pretty hefty portfolio to vouch for the legitimacy and awesomeness of PROJECTMILL as it goes public... * * * Monday, March 17, 2008 Happy St. Patrick's Day, bitches! I've just returned home to Sean and my clean flannel sheets after a horrible 20-hour drive from Austin, straight through the night. SXSW was incredibly busy but incredibly awesome. We mingled and schmoozed with the best of the indie rock scenesters, passing out PROJECTMILL business cards wherever we could. The WOXY lounge acts were amazing. It was so cool to have all these awesome artists come to us in the most intimate and exclusive of settings, as opposed to the rest of SX, where you're gasping for air in a sweaty sea of humanity and you can't see a thing on stage and you want to kill yourself. We got great footage of so many awesome acts, like the Kills, Shout Out Louds, Sons and Daughters, Lightspeed Champion, and Peter Moren (Peter from PB & J). God it was so awesome. And look, here are some pictures of me with celebrities! Me and Lightspeed Champion, who was smelly:
Me and the mom from Friday Night Lights, who had pretty hair:
And me and Perez Hilton, who was a fat pig bitch:
Although I've probably never been uglier, so I can see why he wanted nothing to do with me. So anyway thanks so much to Mike and Shiv and Bryan Jay and Joe for taking us on. And to James and Sarah for letting us transform their dining room into an editing bay! You guys are the best! Videos coming soon... just need to get some sleep and eat something other than Salsa Verde Doritos... * * * Friday, February 8, 2008 Bad news: I totaled my 94 Civic. Good news: PROJECTMILL is in with the in-crowd!! It's official--we're accompanying WOXY to Souh by Southwest to make HD videos of all their lounge acts!! I've been harassing them for months about this and we finally got the green light!! Sweet! * * * Tuesday, January 8, 2008 With the new year comes a new project. Me and Pete have been developing this for a while now, and we recently got our designer friend Josh Mattie involved. It's called PROJECTMILL, and it's a creative collective for artists off all kinds to reach out and seek help/advice/equipment/whatever from other artists. It's cool people encouraging cool people to do cool things. It's a network; an institution. And it's three-strong for now, but I think this could be big. Go to our website and learn more! www.theprojectmill.com And I think I already have a scheme in mind for PROJECTMILL to get me to this year's SXSW festival... more info as it becomes available... * * * Tuesday, January 1, 2008 Happy New Year!! And welcome to mandylevy.com! It's my self-centered website that shows off my self-centered art to people who are interested in learning more about me, Mandy Levy, Jane of all Trades! (It's clever cuz my middle name is Jane.) This is me: This is Cincinnati, where I live:
This is my boyfriend, Pete:
And this is my cat, Sean: He's in a tree. The end.
